The Boat Capsizes

A Search Interrupted
Far from Shore
Geppetto builds a small boat and sets out to search for Pinocchio beyond the sea. He has already spent months looking on land, and the voyage extends his search into open danger.
The Great Shark Appears
A storm overturns the boat, and the Great Shark swallows Geppetto. His search ends not in discovery but in captivity, making the distance between father and son more literal than ever.
A Storeroom in the Dark

Survival by Chance
A Ship’s Cargo
The Great Shark has also swallowed a merchant vessel loaded with preserved meat, biscuits, wine, dried fruit, coffee, sugar, candles, and matches. Geppetto finds provisions and a way to make light in the creature’s darkness.
A Temporary Refuge
The cargo lets him survive, but the supplies are finite and his isolation continues. What appears to be a stocked shelter is only a delay before hunger returns.
Two Years of Waiting

Time Without Freedom
The Years Pass
Geppetto tells Pinocchio that he has been trapped inside the Great Shark for two years. The period has felt longer than its measure because he has lived without escape or certainty of rescue.
Supplies Run Out
At their reunion, only the last candle remains, and the pantry is empty. Geppetto’s survival has depended on luck and careful use of the ship’s stores, but those resources can no longer protect him.
The Failed First Attempt

A Narrow Opening
A Sleeping Creature
Geppetto and Pinocchio reach the Great Shark’s mouth and see the night sky beyond it. They attempt to cross the creature’s tongue while it sleeps with its mouth open.
Thrown Back
The Great Shark sneezes and hurls them into its stomach, extinguishing their candle. The failed attempt shows that even a promising opening is dangerous, but Pinocchio refuses to treat failure as the end of the plan.
A Father Reaches Shore

Captivity Ends
Carried Through the Mouth
Pinocchio carries Geppetto on his back and swims out of the Great Shark into the sea. The exhausted pair struggle toward shore until the Tuna, following Pinocchio’s example, helps them.
Survival Becomes a Beginning
Geppetto reaches land alive, but he is too weak to walk unaided. Their rescue opens a new period in which Pinocchio must support him through daily labor and care.
